Filming in Vancouver: Vince Vaughn, Mel Gibson, The Magicians, Six, and more

The Magicians are coming back to take over Vancouver to shoot Season 3.

As the weather is heating up in Vancouver, so are the screen productions.

This week, we take a brief look at an upcoming cop drama feature film, a counter-terrorism TV series, a fantasy TV series about a magical school, and more.

Off the top of the list of feature films recently announced to shoot here, Dragged Across Concrete will drag two well-known Hollywood names into and across our city: Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn.

Vince Vaughn

In this crime-thriller directed by S. Craig Zahler, Gibson and Vaughn star as police partners who are suspended after a video of their coercive methods triggers a media storm. The pair decide to enter the criminal underworld to get their just due, but they find much more there than they bargained for.

Mel Gibson

This film will mark a reteaming of the leads, as Gibson directed Vaughn in his 2016 war drama Hacksaw Ridge.

The rest of the cast hasn’t been announced yet.

Six

On another testosterone-laden, gritty note (albeit on the small screen), production on 10 episodes of Season 2 on Six kicks off this week on Saturday (June 17) and continues until November 23.

The series focuses on members of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group, better known as SEAL Team Six.

As one of the U.S. Armed Forces’ primary counter-terrorism units, they’re on a secret mission to eliminate a Taliban leader in Afghanistan—but things get complicated when they discover that a U.S. citizen is working with terrorists.

Six

The cast includes Barry Sloane, Kyle Schmid, Juan Pablo Raba, Edwin Hodge, Brianne Davis, Nadine Velazquez, Dominic Adams, and Walton Goggins.

In the first season, a former troop leader (Watlon Goggins) was captured by Nigerian militant Islamist group Boko Haram and SEAL Team Six members had to band together to locate him.

The Magicians

Moving away from guns into the realm of fantasy and magic, The Magicians will be back to shoot Season 3, running from July 11 to December 14.

Based on the novel by Lev Grossman, the series follows a group of students who are recruited to learn the art of spellcasting at a special, secret academy. There, they discover a fantasy world that is as fascinating as it is dangerous.

The cast includes Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, Summer Bishil, Rick Worthy, and Jade Tailor.

The Magicians

Meanwhile here are a few brief notes about upcoming productions for which full details haven’t been revealed:

• Hong Kong filmmaker Yuen Leung Calvin Poon (Repeat I Love You, or Ying zi ai ren) will be in town to shoot Fatal Visit from June 29 to July 21. The cast and further details haven’t been announced yet.

Summer of ’84 will shoot from July 10 to August 10. In this drama-thriller directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, a group of teenagers spend their summer spying on a neighbour who is a police officer because they suspect he’s also a serial killer. As they gather evidence about him, they find themselves entering dangerous territory. The cast hasn’t been announced yet.

There’s a lot coming up on our radar over the next few weeks so be sure to check back in with us again to find out what’s happening on the streets of Hollywood North.
