More than Fireworks: Free music at Celebration of Light
Vancouver’s annual three-night fireworks spectacular Celebration of Light kicks off on Saturday, July 30, with two more shows on Wednesday, Aug. 3, and Saturday, Aug. 6. Dana has a great post up on the best places to see the shows and what to expect. But did you know that Celebration of Light also features free live music?
Preceding the fireworks, free (and, well, almost free) concerts will be staged at three different stages as part of SHOREfest 2011. Acts range from up-and-coming bands competing for airtime on local radio station Shore 104.3 FM to established stars like Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page.
Vanier Park, just across False Creek from downtown, is the site of the Rogue Folk Stage. Located next to the Maritime Museum, the stage will host free live music from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. on fireworks nights. The lineup features No Sinner and Kevin Kane of Grapes of Wrath on July 30, Paul Pigat and The Sojourners on Aug. 3 and Leeroy Stagger and Headwater on Aug. 6.
Kitsilano Beach is featuring the YVR Community Stage, located between the beach and Kits Pool. It’s here that the 10 finalists in Shore 104.3 FM’s radio contest will face off in an epic three-night battle of the bands. The free shows are from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. on July 30, from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. on Aug. 3 and from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. on Aug. 6.
Finally, right in the centre of all the action is the Keg Lounge Stage, on the English Bay Bathhouse roof. Now, this is technically a VIP stage. You need to win an all-access pass from Shore 104.3 FM to get in. But the thing is that the English Bay Bathhouse is going to be literally surrounded by tens of thousands of people on fireworks nights. Anyone in decent proximity should be able to hear the show and maybe even get a glimpse of the performances. Bands take the stage from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. The line-up includes Steven Page and Dusty Bentall on July 30. Wide Mouth Mason and Jeremy Fisher on Aug. 3 and Jim Byrnes and Dan Moxon on Aug. 6.
