Let’s get ready to rumble! The 2016 International Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby (WFTD) Playoffs are coming to the Richmond Olympic Oval this weekend, giving you the chance to see world class roller derby women in action.
And what a group of women these ladies are! This tournament brings together some of the most talented, highly trained skaters from the international roller derby league for an amazing show of fast-paced skating and aggressive running-into-people maneuvers.
How does roller derby work? Honestly, I’ve watched more than a couple of games and I still have a tough time figuring out what’s going on. But, gosh darnit is it still fun to watch, especially with this level of talent!
The tournament will be held just outside Vancouver at the historic Richmond Olympic Oval, a legacy venue from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. This is the first time the world-class venue will see high-level roller derby competition.
The teams attending the event come from locations around the world to compete for the sport’s highest honor: the Hydra trophy and the title of WFTDA Champions. There will be teams competing from Australia, Sweden, New York, Arizona, and of course, Vancouver!
Tickets are still available online for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday events and range from $45 for a single day to $85 for a 3-day weekend pass. The games will range in times and the anticipated schedule is:
Friday – 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 6:00pm, 8:00pm
Saturday – 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 6:00pm, 8:00pm
Sunday – 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 6:00pm
This event is open to roller derby fans of all ages, and kids 8 and under can attend for free. Whether you’ll be cheering in the stands or watching on WFTDA.tv, the tournament will provide everyone who loves roller derby an opportunity to witness the most anticipated match-ups of the year. And for those that don’t even know they love roller derby yet, this is a great opportunity to get a crash course in awesomeness!
