Yaletown is about to go to the dogs.

An estimated 10,000 canines are expected to descend on the Vancouver neighbourhood for the second annual Pet-A-Palooza, Sunday, Aug. 23. The pet extravaganza – billed by organizers as the largest outdoor pet festival on the West Coast – brings together pet lovers and admirers for a full day of doggie-themed fun on Mainland Street in Yaletown.

It’s free to attend and everyone is encouraged to bring their four-legged friends along to partake in the excitement. Watch the area’s most nimble pooches face off in agility showcases and fly-ball shows. Get the low down on pet health during special seminars and demonstrations. In total, nearly 100 pet exhibitors will be on hand with products and advice to keep your mutts happy and healthy.

But the undisputed highlight of Pet-A-Palooza is the infamous Running of the Bulls. Fleet-footed English and French bulldogs face off in this 20-foot sprint along a section of fenced-in turf. The winner gets a year’s supply of dog treats to maintain top form.

And there are plenty of other prizes as well.  The grand prize this year is a full year of pet boarding courtesy of the Jet Pet Resort near Vancouver’s YVR Airport – valued at $20,000.

The event is organized by Just Love Animals, a non-profit dedicated to animal welfare. Companion events have already been held this summer in Calgary and Victoria, drawing upward of 20,000 people. Proceeds from this year’s Vancouver event will benefit Just Love Animal’s current spay and neuter campaign. (Tagline: Got nuts? We can fix that.) They are also working to develop a unique 5-acre pet memorial garden, the first of its kind in Canada.

Admission to Pet-A-Palooza is free and all furry canine friends are welcomed. The event runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23, in the 1100 block of Mainland Street in Yaletown.
