Posh movie night returns to Market by Jean-Georges
Should George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin ever find themselves in Vancouver with an urge to go see a movie, here’s an option fit for Hollywood royalty. Movies at MARKET by Jean-Georges is back, and it’s no ordinary trip to the multiplex.
The event series, which premiered last spring, combines a screening in the plush private theatre of the Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver with an elegant meal at MARKET by Jean-Georges restaurant–the first restaurant in Canada for the three-star Michelin chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.
After a hiatus for the glorious summer, the series resumes twice monthly through December starting this Friday and Saturday (October 2 and 3). The evening involves plush leather seats, sparkling wine, gourmet popcorn, and four courses prepared by a top Vancouver chef …oh, and a motion picture, of course.
Unbeknownst to many Vancouverites, the 36-seat Blue Moon Theatre is tucked away in the Shangri-La Hotel. That’s where the evening starts at 5 p.m., as guests are greeted with a glass of bubbly. At 5:30 p.m., they settle in with popcorn to watch the feature film: in October, that’s Chef, a comedy starring Jon Favreau, Sophia Vergara, and Scarlett Johansson, among others.
The idea is to pair a foodie movie with a meal tailored to food lovers, and Chef definitely fits the bill. While it’s not likely to win any Oscars, the movie is fun and entertaining.
Favreau plays a talented chef who quits an unfulfilling restaurant job in Los Angeles and launches a food truck in Miami, which he then takes on the road. There’s plenty of food porn along the way, and by the end of the film, you’ll be yearning to bite into a Cubano sandwich or twirl up some pasta aglio e olio (with garlic and oil) yourself.
Here’s a preview.
After the movie, guests are led to MARKET by Jean-Georges where each party has a private four-course meal. Chef de Cuisine Montgomery Lau creates dishes inspired by each film.
For example, for Chef, he’s preparing a version of pasta aglio e olio with orzo, clams, and mussels as well as an elegant roasted pork shoulder dish that incorporates the “flavours of a Sandwich Cubano” with Swiss cheese, fried pickles, and more.
Tickets for Movies at MARKET are priced at $78 with wine pairings available for an additional $55 or $110. For more information or for reservations, call the restaurant at 604-695-1115.
If you miss Chef in October (tickets are almost sold out, so act quickly), the next film in the series is set for November 7 and 8. It will be Red Obsession, a 2013 Australian documentary based on interviews with winemakers and wine lovers around the world.
