Bookworms unite at Expozine and the Salon du Livre de Montréal
The chilly winds of mid-November in Montreal inspire thoughts of long winters curled up by a fireplace with a pile of good books. Get your seasonal stack – and more – at two fun events this month, perfectly suited to literary types: Expozine and Salon du Livre de Montréal…
Expozine has been Montreal’s acclaimed small press, comics and zine fair for 11 years now, and every year seems to expand its horizons. The humongous room full of tables rented by independent authors and publishers attracts thousands of avid readers and culture consumers every year – partially for its food counter, which always offers yummy fare. Aside from the latest publications by indie publishers in both English and French, including Conundrum Press, Drawn + Quarterly, Encre Noire and the Howl Arts Collective, you’ll also find paper art works (from posters to calendars) by local artists like Billy Mavreas, Graham Hall and Nadia Moss. Here’s a chance to expand your collection AND your mind.
The Salon du Livre de Montréal is like Expozine’s big French brother – it’s giant, 37 years old and unites hundred of established publishers at the mega-huge Place Bonaventure. Dedicated exclusively to French-language publications, it spans six days and boasts famous guest speakers, including, this year, the great playwright and novelist Michel Tremblay (a fixture), Michel Marc Bouchard and, from France, Katherine Pancol. Go from booth to booth to explore the latest and greatest in French writing, or participate in some of the extra programming, including animated live interviews and roundtables, at partner spaces including L’Agora, Espace Archambault and the Place Confort TD. And while you’re shopping for yourself, why not buy an extra copy to slip into the Lecture en cadeau box? The charity distributed donated books to kids aged 0 to 12 who couldn’t otherwise afford them.
