Things to do in Montreal: November 21-27

It’s such an exciting theatre week! There are three solid plays to pick from, plus an exciting new Warhol exhibition, a whack of flicks for us film lovers, and the last shebang of M for Montreal. How will we ever manage to fit in any work?

(live music) There’s a couple days left of M for Montreal to enjoy! Read this for a sense of what to see. (One not miss for sure is the return of legendary Montreal band Grimskunk on November 22, accompanied by the great Slaves on Dope and more. Except a ripe’n’raw good time.) At Sala Rossa, November 21 is time to answer the call of Operators; then again Mozart’s Little Sister is playing that same night at Bar le Ritz PDB. As Brad Paisley rocks out the Bell Centre on November 22, the round, rocking sound of Thee Oh Sees graces Le National – or there’s Sick of It All at Foufounes Électriques, if you like things a little more jagged. Montreal stars Simple Plan return to their hometown with a bunch of friends onstage at Corona Theatre on November 23. The chilled out folk inflections of Allah-Las take over Petit Campus on November 26, and the next night, November 27, you’ve got to pick between Run the Jewels at Club Soda and Sloan at Sala Rossa.

TM-Warhol[1]

(off-the-wall art) The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has a different kind of Andy Warhol exhibition to offer: a show that’s all about his posters and magazine illustrations. Warhol worked as an advertiser-slash-artist for much of his career, taking commercial imagery and spinning it on its head. This exhibition spotlights the fifty posters and almost a thousand illustrations he did for 400 magazines. Catch Warhol Mania on Wednesday night for a reduced rate of only $10. Meanwhile, Galerie-B312, in the Belgo Building, basically relocated beloved Mile End art gallery and junk shop Monastiraki into its space for an exhibition until December 20. What Goes Around Comes Around unites some of the owners Billy Mavreas and Emilie O’Brien’s favourite art works and knickknacks, and it’s like stepping into their minds – and it’s wacky fun.

(fun flicks) Image+Nation continues until November 30, with some knockout watchables: read this now to know what 10 films you won’t want to miss. Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal continues through November 23; don’t miss Marinoni on Friday, November 21 at 9 pm, which tells the story of 75-year-old distance cyclist Giuseppe Marinoni and his mission to beat the world record. On November 27, head to Phi Centre for a night of flicks picked by Quebec actress Évelyne Brochu. On the program, starting at 7:30 pm: The Misfits, a ‘60s cowboy love story starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, followed by The Chaperone, based on the true story of a teacher chaperoning a school dance in 1970s Montreal that becomes overrun by a biker gang. It features hand-drawn animation, miniature sets, puppets, live action Kung Fu and explosions, all done in stereoscopic 3D.

TM-Social Studies[1]

(power plays) From November 26 to 30 at MainLine Theatre, No One Like Hugh is a parody of Shakespeare’s mistaken-identity comedies that tells the story of Princess Lavender and the noble Hugh, whose his evil identical twin plans to dethrone and usurp. Not the best start to a love story! Written and directed by Jimmy Karamanis, it stars Travis Martin and Alexander Smith. Over at Centaur, Social Studies class continues until November 30. The comedy by Tricia Cooper tells the story of a New Age single mom who takes in a boarder, a lost boy of Sudan, just as her adult daughter returns home to cocoon after a failed marriage. And at the Segal Centre, until November 30 you can catch Bunny Bunny, Gilda Radner: A Sort of Love Story. Just in time for the 40th Anniversary of Saturday Night Live, this laugh-filled adaptation of Adam Zweibel’s homage to Radner illustrates the most cherished memories of his long friendship with the comedy icon.
