Dance the Winter Away at Igloofest 2015
When the going gets cool, the cool get dancing in Montreal’s Old Port. As the mercury hits rock bottom in January and February, the bottom end gets a boost for the thousands upon thousands of electronic music fans who bundle into Igloofest’s Igloo Village over four weekends of top-rated local and international DJs…
For its ninth edition, Igloofest – which takes place this year Jan. 16-18, Jan. 23-25, Jan. 30 to Feb. 1, and Feb. 6-8 – will once again take over the Jacques-Cartier Quay in the Old Port of Montreal, immediately adjacent to Old Montreal. Architecturally innovative, custom designed stages and beautifully crafted laser light shows and video projections will help showcase the dozens and dozens of DJs working in a multiplicity of genres, sub-genres and sub-sub-genres. If it’s not here and it hasn’t had a beat put to it, it doesn’t exist (yet).
Igloofest programming strikes a balance between stylistic pioneers and hungry up-and-comers, and organizers this year note that “if much of the 2015 lineup reads like the biggest concentration of legendary house and techno DJs to be found anywhere west of Ibiza, that’s because it most probably is.” Among these are dance music “elder statesmen” Luciano (trailblazing, Latin-infused minimal techno), Richie Hawtin collaborator Loco Dice (big-room techno), Dubfire (tech-house pioneer and one half of monumental Washington, DC DJ duo Deep Dish), and progressive-house-turned-atmospheric-techno kingpin John Digweed. And those are but a handful of the marquee EDM names that will be gracing the tables. Please visit the Igloofest website to stay abreast of the still-expanding lineup.
Chief among new things of note at the festival this year is the change in the days on which the dance parties are held. In previous years, events were held on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (over a four-weekend period). New starting this year, the three-day blocks will happen on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays – again from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. – so as to better accommodate those who may only be traveling to Montreal Friday to Sunday, and as a means of draining every last drop of possibility and fun out of the weekend.
Also new is a larger dance floor to accommodate more folks and facilitate easier movement between sections of the Igloo Village, which will this year feature an added terrasse on the side of the main stage for an up-close, in-on-the-action experience. And their annual, much-anticipated one-piece snowsuit contest now has a new and fancier name: the “Sapporo Iglooswag Contest.” The contest invites festivalgoers to be photographed at the “Sapporo Photo Caribooth” while dressed in their finest and/or craziest winter fashions. Winners will be chosen and will be eligible to win a warm winter vacation.
