Slip ‘n’ slide fanatics have reason to be hopeful.

The city of North Vancouver has confirmed that a giant, 1,000-foot-long waterslide is still slated to be set up on Lonsdale Avenue this Aug. 22.  Though plans for the slide were announced in the spring, and tickets have already sold out, it had been looking like water restrictions would spell an end to all the slipping and sliding.

But this week planners were able to hammer out a compromise. The water needed to run the massive slide is now going to be trucked in from either Harrison Lake or Pitt Lake in the Fraser Valley, areas outside Metro Vancouver, which is currently facing Stage 3 water restrictions. An estimated two tankers worth of water will be used, and a water recirculation system will be employed to minimize water waste.

There is one big caveat, however. If the local drought worsens, and the city enters Stage 4 water restrictions, the event will be cancelled, according to an article in the Vancouver Sun.

The huge slide, operated by a company called Slide the City, will be part of North Vancouver’s Car Free Day Festival on Aug. 22. Sections of lower Lonsdale Avenue are to be closed to traffic and the street will be filled with food vendors, live bands, interactive games and local merchants selling their wares.

The main attraction, however, is likely to be the slide, which will stretch a full three blocks from Keith Road to Third Street. Participants pay $25 for a single run on the enormous vinyl structure, reminiscent of childhood slip ‘n’ slides but much larger and packed with extra padding and inflatable bumpers. Three runs are discounted at $35 and unlimited runs set you back $55, at regular ticket prices. (All tickets sold out months ago.)

Slide the City is a travelling attraction that sets up in cities across North America during the summer months.
