A new series that looks at the world of dating in Vancouver premieres tonight on the Slice Channel.

Filmed on location at the Loft at Earls Kitchen Bar Yaletown (1095 Mainland Street), the series pairs up local singles for real first dates, and captures all the attendant awkwardness and small talk.

Based on a format devised by Warner Bros.’ TV production arm, First Dates showcases singles who have been paired up for a first date with someone they’ve never met. In each episode, the cameras record the dates of three hand-matched couples.

In preparation, the restaurant was fitted with more than 30 fixed-rig cameras to capture every moment, including awkward small talk, flirtatious (or non-flirtatious) glances, faux pas, and subtle, or sometimes forced, smiles.

To make an already-awkward situation even more uncomfortable, at the end of the night, each single is interviewed solo, and asked to reflect on the best and worst moments of their date.

The couples are then reunited side by side to reveal whether there will be a second date, or not.

The show airs back-to-back new episodes Tuesdays at 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. ET/PT on Slice.

To help promote the show, Earls’ Yaletown location is holding special free weekly advance screenings each Tuesday during the show’s seven-week run. TV screens through the room will play clips of the show interspaced with a live Twitter feed of #FirstDatesCan and #EarlsFirstDates comments. The evening begins at 6, with the screening at 7 (three hours in advance of actual air-time) with a new Vancouver Singles Night, including drinks and food at happy hour prices and a DJ, to follow.
