World Cinema Comes to Vancouver: Vancouver International Film Fest, Sept. 26 – Oct. 11

From India: a story of an underappreciated Mumbai housewife who mistakenly delivers her husband’s lunchbox to another man. From Singapore: a look inside the lives of a young, privileged boy and his Filipina nanny. From France: an old-fashioned romance played out inside a nuclear power station.

These are just a few of the hotly anticipated releases at the 32nd installment of the Vancouver International Film Festival, Sept. 26-Oct. 11. Featuring more than 340 films from 70 countries, the festival is one of the largest in North America, drawing 150,000 viewers every year.

Films are screened at nine theatres across the city during the two-week-long festival, giving viewers a rare chance to see gems of world cinema in brilliant color and sound. This year marks the first time features will be shown in the 1,800-seat Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts, a world-class venue sure to impress film buffs with its enormous screen and state-of-the-art sound.

Apart from its focus on international films, the festival also showcases hundreds of original Canadian productions. Attracting early rave reviews is the homegrown drama Sarah Prefers to Run, about a gifted athlete who proves inept at navigating the romantic landscape.

Aside from what’s on the screen, the festival is also packed with galas where movie lovers can rub shoulders with directors and actors, industry workshops and dedicated events highlighting young, local filmmakers.
