Cinemania? Oui merci!
On the eve of its 20th anniversary edition, Cinemania is one of the Fall’s most anticipated film events – and it couldn’t be more quintessentially Montreal. The film festival unites the best of French-language cinema every year and shows them with English subtitles. Mais oui!
In an initiative purely inspired by Montreal’s rich bilingual heritage, Cinemania was launched in 1995 as a humble little gathering in a screening room of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Today, the 2014 edition spans 11 jam-packed days, from November 6 to 16, and takes place at the beautiful Imperial Cinema, in the Quartier des Spectacles.
In addition to the parties, talks and glamorous Gala on November 8, the offerings this year include the opening film Gemma Bovery, a film by Anne Fontaine, of Coco Before Chanel fame. This adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel by Posy Simmonds (which itself was a modern take on Gustave Flaubert’s famous novel Madame Bovary) tells the story of Martin, an ex-Parisian relocated to picturesque Normandy, whose British neighbours turn out to be called Gemma and Charles Bovery. Madness ensues!
Also unmissable is Bertrand Bonello’s Saint Laurent, which zooms in on a particularly significant time in French designer Yves Saint Laurent’s life, as his career was taking off in the late ‘60s. The rich and shimmering biopic presents an intimate portrait of the man’s personal life, as well as the global events and trends that influenced his work. The film won the ICS Cannes Award this summer.
