Eight Awesome Warm Boozy Drinks to Beat Vancouver Grey Sky Blues

Grapes SodaBye bye blue skies, hello grey. We all knew this was coming but the annual return of ‘Raincouver’ can still feel like a nasty shock, fortunately the city’s hot-shot bartenders have you covered. Nothing spreads seasonal cheer quite like a hot cocktail and we’ve picked seven of our favourites which will take you straight to your happy place.

Dante’s Handshake at Grapes Soda

A showstopper of a ‘blazer-style’ drink at GS, this delicious creation can turn a room full of damp grumpy Vancouverites into an ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘ahhh-ing’ crowd of happy drinkers. A joy-bringing blend of Caribbean rums, salt caramel and Amontillado sherry with just a touch of peat, watching the drink made at table side, as your bartender carefully pours a flaming stream of alcohol between the two copper pots is a total delight.

thierryNaughty or Nice Choc-Eggnog at Thierry’s

If things are unravelling, head to Thierry’s and order a warm Naughty or Nice Eggnog and prepare for everything to feel much better very soon. A wildly indulgent blend of house-made eggnog, 40% Ecuadorian chocolate, Tahitian vanilla bean, milk and a dash of nutmeg, spike it with a spirit of your choice (may we suggest bourbon?) and feel stress slip away.

Spiced Apple Cider at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Lobby Lounge

It’s high-tech warming season over at the Lobby Lounge where the ace bar team are using sous vide machines to heat their seasonal warm cocktail selections to the perfect temperature. We love the spiced Apple Cider, a pleasingly boozy blast of spiced rum, apple cider, black tea, ginger, lemon, cinnamon and nutmeg.

BlackberryTea_LandscapeBlueberry Tea at The Wedgwood Hotel

Snuggle up in one of the cosy velvet banquettes in the Bacchus Room and let the harsh word outside fade into soft focus as you sip on a warming Blueberry Tea. A fragrant soul-warming blend of Amaretto, Grand Marnier, and orange pekoe tea garnished with a cinnamon stick served up in a brandy snifter, this is guaranteed to make everything feel better.

BLVD_JustinTaylor_LumberjackThe Lumberjack at Boulevard

Canadian drinking at its finest over at Boulevard, thanks to cocktail whizz, Justin Taylor. The Lumberjack is a decadent mix of spiced raisin butter, bourbon and steamed cider, and comes topped with a feather blanket of Chantilly cream and a cinnamon sugar crisp to nibble on.

Woodland Ranger at Bambudda

This Pacific Northwest-inspired sipper is made with Grand Fir-infused Wallflower Gin from Vancouver’s Odd Society, Bridge Brewing’s Hopilano IPA and a judicious dash of grapefruit juice, bitters, and lime. Served heated with a garnish of Grand Fir and cinnamon stick, this drink from Bambudda packs a sneaky hot punch thanks to the addition of cinnamon syrup –simmered with a half Scotch Bonnet pepper.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHouse Coffee at Joe Fortes

Trust Joe’s to deliver comfort in a coffee glass thanks to their brilliantly boozy house coffee. Combining the nutty flavour of Frangelico with whiskey-spiked creamy Bailey’s in a tall Americano coffee topped off with whipped cream, it’s the perfect post-meal pick-you-up –and, if we’re honest, does a pretty solid job without a meal too.

Hot Buttered Rum at Hy’s

Slip away from the drizzle of Downtown and check out Hy’s gorgeous new upstairs lounge. A classic Mad Man-esque bolthole of leather and wine racks, put away your phone, and focus on enjoying the simple pleasures in life such as Hot Buttered Rum made just right with Bacardi Black rum. Perfect with a side of their wildly addictive cheese toast.
