It’s part food festival, part night market, and part nightclub party…and there’s nothing else quite like it in Vancouver. Hawkers Market is back this Saturday (May 30), and if you play your smartphone apps right, you can get in for free.

The market, which has been happening periodically in Vancouver since September 2012, is billed as a “social food marketplace”. Startup foodie entrepreneurs bring their new products to the venues and meet customers eager to try the latest thing.

It’s the atmosphere that sets Hawkers Markets apart. These markets are bustling with dim lights, energetic music, and young foodies trying whatever’s new and novel as they sip craft beer.

This Saturday, the market takes place from 5 p.m. until late at the Rocky Mountaineer train station. Expect over 50 local food businesses, including Asian street food from EzLing Street Eats. (Chef Ling Wong’s octopus dishes sold out in the first hour of the last Hawkers’ event.)

Hugos Churros will be offering their Mexican pastries, and brand new Nice Vice Ice Cream selling vegan ice cream.

Drinks include Indigenious teas and botanical sodas made from wild, foraged B.C. ingredients by the Capilano Tea House and Botanical Soda Co. There will also be craft beer from 33 Acres Brewing Company.

Two pop-up kitchens will be cooking up a storm, along with food trucks. For other shopping, there will be local artisans, independent craftspeople, and art collectives.

Entertainment will include local DJs, a band, and a free outdoor showing of Wes Anderson’s cult classic The Life Aquatic at 10:30 p.m.

Usually, there’s an admission fee to the market of $10 to $15. But this market is being sponsored by Flook, a local buy-sell app for Android and iPhone.

To get in free, download the Flook app to your phone through the Apple Ap store or the Google Play store and show it at the door.
