Game On! Whistler Outdoor Ice Skating Returns

TAG: Cultural Fix, Family Time, Freebies Fun

Thanks to an early December cold snap many of the Whistler lakes froze over and hundreds of people took to the ice for some cold, crisp Canadiana. Impromptu games of “shinny” (pond hockey) sprung up all over town as Whistler guests and residents alike enjoyed one of the best things about winter in Canada.

And to keep the good times rolling a fresh season of free public ice skating at the Whistler Olympic Plaza kicks off this Saturday December, 14, 2013. Skating is free, rentals are cheap and there’s hot chocolate to keep the kids going.

An important consideration when skating on ponds or lakes: always make sure the ice is at least six inches thick before venturing out. With fresh snow falling the Whistler lakes will also require a shovel if you really want a nice sheet to play on. Of course, at the Olympic Plaza they have a Zamboni that keeps the ice clear and clean.

In the meantime, check out these #WhistlerUnfiltered shots from last weekend’s ice capades. Game on! Winter is here.
