Girl Jam Off Leash showcases Vancouver’s top female improvisors
Every Wednesday in November and December, Vancouver TheatreSports is showcasing some of Vancouver’s top female improvisors.
Girl Jam, a presentation of the Vancouver TheatreSports League, features an all-female cast in what the League calls the “Off Leash” slot (9:15 p.m.).
Improv champs from VTSL’s mainstage as well as hot new talent from Vancouver’s improv community will mix it up in short and long form games.
One reason for the special showcase series is that the TheatreSports League’s Improv Comedy Institute has seen an increase in enrolment by women, according to ICI Director Margret Nyfors.
“We want to continue to support this trend and especially support those ladies who want to pursue improv professionally,” Nyfors is quoted in a press release.
“Our goal with Girl Jam is to have a great time playing together and, hopefully, inspire other women (and men) to recognize the power and joy of women on stage.”
The cast will rotate each show. Some of the performers include Angela Galanopoulos, who has studied in Chicago at The Second City and iO; VTSL Artistic Director (and Leo Award nominee for her performance in the film Preggoland) Denise Jones; and VTSL vets Nyfors, Ellen Kennedy and Elizabeth Bowen.
Each Girl Jam at Off Leash show runs for 60 minutes starting at 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at The Improv Centre (1502 Duranleau St.) on Granville Island. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at vtsl.com.
