Katniss on a hot tin roof—Hunger Games finale gets spoofed in Mockingjay: The Musical

It seems like Katniss is getting on someone’s nerves…

Who doesn’t love a good dystopian sci-fi spoof, especially when it comes wrapped up in pop tunes?

Local company District 13 continues its spoofery of everyone’s favourite never-ending YA dystopian soap opera Hunger Games with Mockingjay: The Musical.

This is the third in the company’s well-received efforts at dressing-down the Suzanne Collins-Katniss Everdeen juggernaut. The show starts this Thursday (Nov. 23) and runs until Saturday at Studio 1398, 1398 Cartwright Street on Granville Island. Get your tickets soon; Saturday’s show is already sold-out.

Mockingjay: The Musical follows District 13’s productions of Hunger Games: The Musical and Catching Fire: The Musical. Both were hits at the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

In case you haven’t followed the trials and tribulations of Suzanne Collins’ creation Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence in the movies), this third installment has our heroine joining the rebels to take on evil President Snow.

In this version, she also belts out songs in the style of Taylor Swift and Rihanna (and more) with her brainwashed beau Peeta in tow.

Local writer/director Mark Vandenberg is the creative force behind the series. The original cast of the first two musicals, including Jennifer Pielak as Katniss and Riley Sandbeck as Peeta, is also back. Performer include Amy Dauer, Morgan Churla, Matthew Simmons, Rebecca Piplica, Ryan Scramstad, Cecilia Rahoerason, Lisa Penz, Brad Rossington, Vic Ustare, and Rick Colhoun.

According to the media release, “this musical is full of fun pop music parodies that will get your toes tapping…

“Along with skewering the plot, characters, and themes from the original story, Mockingjay: The Musical is packed with upbeat mainstream pop songs with creative new lyrics.”

Hunger Games: The Musical sold out many of its shows at the 2015 Vancouver Fringe Festival. Last year’s Catching Fire: The Musical was similarly successful.

Mockingjay: The Musical is part of Theatre Wire’s 2017-2018 season. Other local favourites in the season include Solo Collective Theatre, ITSAZOO Productions, and Zee Zee Theatre. Up-and-comers include Nebula Company Theatre and Little Mountain Lion and Fringe favourite Stéphanie Morin-Robert. The season runs through May 27, 2018.

Tickets to Mockingjay: The Musical are $25 in advance at theatrewire.com and at the door.
