It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the, pun intended, Cornucopia of choices at Whistler’s bustling annual food and drink extravaganza. From tasting the world at Night Market, to tasting the stars at CRUSH to the seminars or wellness events, you’d have to be superhuman to experience even half of the tasty offerings planned for the ten tasty days and nights that make up Whistler Cornucopia.
It’s always a good call to check out the new events that emerge each year at Cornucopia and be the first to discover new, fresh experiences and tastes. Last year, Poured made its debut, pleasing the large crew of imbibers who wisely do not believe in the old wives tale of sticking to one type of alcohol. This year, the traditional Friday night CRUSH event has been absorbed by Saturday CRUSH, opening the door to the cellar, as it were, for Cellar Door.
At only $99, Cellar Door could be the steal of the festival, a chance to roam amongst the bigwigs of the wine world without pretense or expectation. Set for the first Friday night of Cornucopia 2014, Cellar Door is conceived as a “smaller, more intimate tasting featuring more than 25 wineries and showcasing more than 100 wines priced at $35 and up per bottle”.
This sounds like the perfect event for tasting those “special occasion” bottles that you a) are in the market for but want to be sure of your selection or b) may not be ready to splash out for but would, wisely, never pass up the opportunity to experience.
Included in the ‘who’s who’ of the wine world at Cellar Door are some of the most respected and trusted wineries and winemakers on the market; Ex Nihilo Covert Farms, Burrowing Owl, Peter Lehmann, Black Hills, Craggy Range, Sage Hills Winery, and numerous other boutique and high-end wineries and wine groups to take you from sombre and sober to sassy and stirring.
Since food is an equally important aspect of Cornucopia, Cellar Door will also feature various food stations, all on the upper end of the scale of deliciousness. The Four Season’s Whistler Sidecut Restaurant will be serving samples of their mouthwatering fare, Whistler Conference Centre has comforting and perfectly paired morsels, Minami Sushi will complement a number of the refreshing whites on offer, Terra Breads soaks it all up with their indulgent and satisfying bread and cracker range, Rogers Chocolate (need we say more) and Dairy Farmers of Canada with the classic pairing of sumptuous cheese to top it all off.
Cellar Door kicks off your Cornucopia with an evening of intimate and interactive tasting, indulgence and socializing. Then, just two nights later another new-for-2014 offering: With a Twist is another new event that brings wineries, breweries and distilleries together to offer their wares alongside local restaurants and bar mixologists. It’s basically a “choose your own adventure” for the tastebuds as you explore your way through a plethora of drinks, mixing your own cocktails, sipping spirits luxuriously on the rocks or comparing wine styles to your heart’s content. Sounds like fun? Those are only the new events on Cornucopia’s first weekend. Pace yourself Cornucopians, there’s a whole ‘nother week of fine food, delicious beverages and (necessary) wellness events ahead.
Cellar Door takes place Friday November 7, 2014 from 8-11 PM in the Grand Foyer of the Whistler Conference Centre. With a Twist takes place at the same location from 8-11 PM Sunday Night November 9, 2014. Tickets for both events and information on the many other incredible Cornucopia shindigs can be found at Whistlercornucopia.com
