Molten glass + cold beer = one sizzling night

There’s something riveting about glassblowing. Maybe it’s the molten glass, maybe it’s the intensity of the 1,200° C (2,220° F) heat blasting out of the open furnace. Maybe it’s the high-pressure, make-or-break (literally) nature of the art.

Whatever it is, it’s fascinating to watch talented glass artists do their thing. And it’s even better to watch it while enjoying good craft beer.

All of this comes together for one night–Friday, March 13–at an event called Hot Glass Cold Beer. It’s the second annual fundraiser for Terminal City Glass Co-op, Canada’s only non-profit co-operative glass studio.

TCGC has invited in nine craft breweries to stage a tasting on the premises. Not only will guests sample some of B.C.’s latest craft beer offerings, they’ll do it from a hand-blown glass beer mug.

The studio’s talented team of artists are hard at work making this year’s glass mugs (above). At the end of the night, guests can bring their mug home as a souvenir. And over the course of the evening, the artists will be twirling and swirling hot glass, demonstrating how the mugs are made.

Some of the breweries setting up tasting tables include Vancouver’s Storm Brewing, Bomber Brewing, and Steamworks Brewery, as well as North Vancouver’ Deep Cove Brewers Distillers.

One of B.C.’s newest breweries, Old Abbey Ales from Abbotsford in the Fraser Valley, will also be offering tastings.

DJ Darkcloud will be spinning tunes, and the Disco Cheetah food truck will be parked outside, selling Korean bulgogi tacos and burritos.

Hot Glass Cold Beer runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on March 13. Tickets cost $55 per person and include six beer-tasting tokens; additional tokens are $1.25 each.

Even though tickets just went on sale a few days ago, they’re already over half sold, so jump on it if you’re interested.

And if you can’t make it on March 13, Terminal City Glass Co-op offers ongoing glassblowing classes and seminars; check the website for the latest
