More Details on Free $1.2-Million World Cup Fan Zone Coming to Downtown Vancouver

Searching for a place to party during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Vancouver this June? Look no further.
A $1.2-million fan zone is coming to downtown Vancouver, offering soccer aficionados a dedicated place to watch the action, enjoy a few beers and soak up the World Cup atmosphere. The free fan zone will be located just a block or two from B.C. Place stadium, where Vancouver’s matches are taking place, at Larwill Park. Situated just off Georgia Street and adjacent the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, the park (in reality a parking lot) also served as the host for the epic Live City Vancouver celebrations during the 2010 Olympics.

The time around the free fan zone is designed to accommodate 5,000-6,000 people at a time. Games will be shown on two large screens under a special tented area. Outside, there will be live music and entertainment, plus a mini soccer pitch, as well as special interactive pavilions from FIFA and sponsors including Adidas and Coca-Cola. Plans even call for an interactive women’s locker room exhibit.
Also key for World Cup fans: the entire fenced-in site will be one large beer garden, with plenty of chances to fill your cup. A host of food trucks should keep hungry viewers well fed, as well.

The free fan zone is scheduled to be open on 12 scheduled days from June 6-July 5: during each of the nine World Cup matches that Vancouver is hosting (including the final), as well as for matches involving the Canadian squad, on Canada Day and for the third-place match. Across town, soccer lovers can also take in the action at Jack Poole Plaza at Canada Place, where Fox has erected a special two-story broadcasting studio and viewing screen above the waters of Coal Harbour. In addition to the 6.4- by 3.4-metre high-res screen, the site features 15 cameras, a retractable motorized rain shield and even a dedicated drone for taking aerial shots around the set.
The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off on June 6, with a total of nine matches played in Vancouver, including the all important final on July 5. Remaining matches are played in other Canadian cities, from coast to coast. The epicentre of all the action in Vancouver is B.C. Place Stadium, where tickets to early-stage matches start as low as $20.15 (before taxes and service fees).
