Must-see Vancouver Artisans, Film makers and Designers at IDSWest
The Interior Design Show West rolls into Vancouver this week and they are turning 10.
From September 25-28 designers, retailers, magazine editors and film makers all take over Vancouver Convention Centre West in the name of spreading the gospel of savvy, good-looking and efficient interior design. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Western Canada’s largest interior design show with 35,000 attendees expected and over 250 exhibitors at the show.
Though there will be HGTV stars, internationally known designers, and publishers in attendance, the number of interesting sessions hosted by acclaimed Vancouverites is impressive. Below you’ll find my picks of must-see locals curating, speaking, and teaching at IDSWest 2014.
The District: by Poppytalk – Folks looking to buy handmade goods from Vancouver artisans artists can pop by The District curated by local lifestyle blog Poppytalk (brainchild of designers Jan Halvarson and Earl Einarson). My personal faves in the district: Cathy Terepocki ceramics, The Hive printing’s mega detailed Vancouver map t-shirts, Winterluxe recycled cashmere cushions and cozy, West Coasty Forest Waves blankets. The District is a cash and carry marketplace that runs throughout the length of IDSWest.
Coast Modern Documentary – Ever wonder about the common architectural threads tying together modernist homes dotting the landscapes of Cascadia? Local film makers Gavin Froome and Mike Bernard travelled the coastline between LA and Vancouver seeking out modernist dwellings that embrace the beauty of their locations. According to modernist architect Dion Neutra living spaces should be about ‘the comfort of being inside, yet you have the feeling of being outside.’ The film explores West Coast homes that display a sense of place, light and deep connection to the earth. Friday, September 26, 7:30 p.m. on the Living Space Design Stage.
Living Big in Small Spaces – Real estate prices are crazy in Vancouver, hence density of condos and townhomes. Vancouverites Jennifer Eden of Occupy Design and Eric Siu of Resource Furniture join designers from Seattle and Portland to chat about how to live big in small spaces. Speakers will share their tips on small space design, smart storage and creative use of color/patterns. Saturday, September 27, 12:00 p.m. on the Gray Convesation Stage.
Monogram Dinner by Design – For the second year, the folks from the Social Concierge and GE Monogram, in partnership with IDSWest, will host an offsite event for a good cause. Over 10 local designers and event planners will set beautiful, lush dining tables for a series of events: a cocktail evening, a dinner gala celebration and public viewings. Dinner by Design proceeds to go to the Doctor Peter AIDS Foundation. Participating designers include: Bash + Fete, Provide, The Cross Decor and Design and Robert Blaney Design. CBC Studios September 21-22. More info here: http://dinnerxdesign.com
