Red Bull Music Academy brings music icons to Montréal
The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) gathers musicians from around the world for an annual conference and concert-a-thon featuring both legends and next-big-things in the music industry. The RBMA doesn’t place many limits on music style and on who can be involved, so the genres span from hip hop to dub, house to soca, drum’n’bass to, well, pretty much anything that will — errr — give you wings.
Over the years, the event has been at the forefront of celebrating and documenting music history, while simultaneously adding new chapters to it through its much-lauded network of events, lectures, editorial content and radio programming. Cities such as Berlin, New York, Tokyo, São Paulo and Cape Town have hosted the annual Red Bull Music Academy.
This year, the big event is coming to Montréal.
According to the Red Bull Music Academy, “Montréal has been at the epicentre of Canadian artistic experimentation for decades, which makes the city an ideal fit.” We’re not going to argue. As one of North America’s cultural capitals, our charming French Canadian city makes an ideal location for an event of this nature: a multilingual makeup and multicultural vitality. It’s a setting that supports a thriving art scene, which in turn has nourished creativity of all shapes and sizes.

We’ve got good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad: much of RBMA is invite-only. As a multidisciplinary arts and culture hub, Phi Centre will serve as the home base for 70 hand-picked Academy participants from 38 countries. They will attend intimate lecture sessions and collaborate on music in an expansive, custom-built creative studio space. Access to this space is limited.
The good news, however, is that many shows and special events are open to the public, and taking place at some of the coolest venues across the city. Don’t miss these events:
Iggy Pop. In Canada’s oldest theater, the punk icon will participate in a lengthy conversation about his colossal career with noted Canadian music journalist Carl Wilson. See more.
Fucked Up and Tanya Tagaq. Both artists have both won the prestigious Polaris Music Prize, but their approaches to sound are far from mainstream. See more.
Björk. Far from being solely a musical innovator, the Icelandic icon has consistently been at the forefront of artistic advancements in interactive technology. She’ll be premiering a new VR film. See more.
Tiga. The renown Canadian electronic music producer is set to play his debut headline live with special guests The Martinez Brothers, Matias Aguayo, plus more TBA. See more.
Red Bull Music Academy starts on September 24 with a night of cream-of-the-crop techno and house, featuring Rrose, DJ Richard, Xosar, Mathew Jonson, Aurora Halal and Mike Servito. The cool factor? The entire evening is a collaboration with Never Apart, a non-profit organization determined to bring about social change and spiritual awareness through cultural programming with global reach and impact.
