Sugar & Gluten: Whistler’s Top 5 Sweet Treats

Yes, gorging on refined sugar is probably best done in moderation and a 1400 calorie “snack” is definitely not something you should be making a habit of but hey, you’re on holiday! And if your eyes can feast on Whistler’s epic mountain scenery and your soul can nourish itself with all these incredible outdoor activities, doesn’t it make sense to throw your tastebuds a bone now and then? Yes it does. So the Insider hit the cobblestones of Whistler Village and came back with a stern look of disapproval from our dentist and this list of Whistler’s healthiest, sweetest, most taste-bud-pleasuring snacks.

1.    Maple Bacon Donut

Portobello, Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Upper Village
Studies show that Canadians eat about 600 million donuts each year, more per capita than any other country on the planet.  Maple syrup is also intrinsically woven into the fabric of nation and who doesn’t love bacon? So the maple bacon donut is a trifecta of awesomeness that has to be tried to be believed (surprise! It’s got a creamy custard centre). Portobello also makes some of the best sandwiches in town, if you’re looking for some protein to help reign in those blood sugar levels.

2.    Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Skor Bar

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Whistler Village
Flavour layering at its best! Sea salt and dark chocolate compliment each other perfectly because the salt actually suppresses some of the acidity and bitterness of the dark chocolate while biologically helping tastebuds on your tongue receive the sweetness.  This makes for a smoother and sweeter dark chocolate boldness and with just the right amount of butter toffee (made on-site) and this bar might blow your tastebuds right through the roof of your head.

Runner up is the Chewy Marmot, a milk chocolate base with homemade caramel and topped with white chocolate and almonds. Chewy Marmots were invented right here in Whistler and are not available at any other Rocky Mountain Chocolate location.

3.    Anything at Purebread

Purebread, Whistler Olympic Plaza
Personally I like the baseball-sized globe of deep-fried dough filled with tangy lemon deliciousness then rolled in white sugar (they call it a Lemon Sugar Bun) but just about anything behind the counter at Purebread could easily make this list. This is Whistler premier sugar shack and Purebread bakers have even opted to call one of their treats “crack” due to its addictive popularity amongst the Whistler locals. For the sweet tooth, this place is off the charts.

4.    Giant Raspberry Chocolate Cookie

Moguls Coffee House, Whistler Village Square
Moguls has the decency to stay open late, late into the evening so as to ensure no sugar craving goes unsatisfied. Their cookies are made in-house and are literally the size of your face, or larger. They’re also tasty as heck and go perfectly with a Moguls coffee. We like the Raspberry Chocolate ones because a berry is healthy right? Wrong, a cookie this size should not be taken lightly because with great cookie comes great responsibility. Share it with a friend, enjoy it with a stranger. These cookies might set fin motion a life-changing series of actions for you. And if not, they still taste amazing.

5.    Vanilla Slice

Peaked Pies, Main Street
Peaked Pies is best known for the proud Australian tradition of eating delicious meat pies at any hour of the day but their sweet items are not to be ignored. This little slice of sugary goodness is a layer of vanilla custard between puff pastry topped with raspberry and buttercream icing. They also have something called a Lamington which is basically a sponge cake dipped in warm chocolate then rolled in coconut. That makes perfect sense doesn’t it?

Of course, these are only a few of the great places to satisfy a sweet tooth in Whistler. The Great Glass Elevator is an entire store full of candy (and delicious popcorn), Rogers’ Chocolate famous Victoria Creams are both classy and delicious and the Mount Currie Coffee Company has great fresh-baked goods with a (slightly) healthier twist. Not to mention Whistler’s plethora of ice cream and gelato spots. Basically just follow your tastebuds and let the sugary good times roll. You can have an extra vegetable at dinner.

Hiking, Biking, Rafting and trail running are some of Whistler’s best ways to burn off that sugary energy, find everything you need to know at Whistler.com
