20 Best Chinese Dishes in Vancouver: Winners of 2013 Chinese Restaurant Awards Announced

Tin_Tin_beefSick of sweet-and-sour pork, fried rice and the same-old MSG-infused Chinese dishes?

You might want to check out this list.

The results of the fifth annual Chinese Restaurant Awards have just been announced.  Top food critics from across the city assembled to pick the top 20 Chinese dishes in Metro Vancouver.  And the results go way beyond the old familiar standbys.

Among the winners this year are baked lemon barbecue pork pie, deep-fried pumpkin sticks with egg yolk sauce and steamed brown sugar rice cake.  Critics opted to throw out the traditional categories used in previous years (best hot pot, best dumplings, etc.) and simply recognize the most amazing dishes available in the city.  Read on for the full list.

Overall, 13 of the winners are from Richmond (famous for “Food Street,” a collection of hundreds of Chinese restaurants along a few blocks of Alexandra Road) and seven winners are from Vancouver.  Kirin Restaurant – the upscale Chinese eatery in Vancouver’s City Square Mall – was the big winner, taking home three awards for its smoked live lobster with assorted mushrooms, geoduck served two ways (pan-fried and deep-fried) and deep-fried boneless chicken with minced prawn, glutinous rice and chestnut paste.

CRA2013CCGVRD-OvenRoastedOysters_BigChefRestaurant (1)A lifetime achievement award of sorts was handed out to Sea Harbour Seafood in Richmond, which has won eight awards over the years, for dishes as diverse as fried squab (2009-2012) and pan-fried spot prawns with soy sauce (2011-2012).

The dish that generated perhaps the most buzz (and will soon be desperately sought by foodies all over the city) was the pan-fried Shanghainese buns from Top Shanghai Cuisine in Richmond.  Often eaten for breakfast, the delicate buns are typically filled with pork and gelatin.  When pan-fried, the bottom of the buns gets crunchy while the inside melts into a soup.

Here’s the complete list of the 20 winners of the 2013 Chinese Restaurant Awards (Anything missing from the list? Weigh in below!):
