5 romantic beach walks in Vancouver
Do you love chocolate, movies, and long walks on the beach?
So does everybody else.
It’s a personal-ad cliche for a reason: most people enjoy a scenic, leisurely walk with a loved one. Whether you’re just getting to know each other or just need some space to hash out that long-festering issue, a beautiful walk has a way of smoothing over the rough edges.
And if things don’t work out, hey–at least you’ve gotten some exercise.
Here are five beaches in Metro Vancouver that are perfect for the walk and talk. They’re just as nice in winter as they are in summer, with far fewer people to come between you and your beloved.
Kitsilano Beach
As you can see from the photo above, Kits Beach in the winter is an entirely different from the party, party, party of summer. With the bikini bodies on the slopes, this area can be downright serene on cold days, making it a great place to bond with your favourite person.
While you can’t walk along the beach the whole way, I love walking the water path from Yew Street around Vanier Park to Granville Island. Even if it’s rainy, you can warm up at the market when you arrive.
Jericho Beach
For real solitude, head to Jericho Beach Park. The views of the North Shore mountains are unparalleled, and there are kilometres of ocean-side paths to walk.
While there are fantastic gravel walking and cycling trails along the water, this is also a great beach if you want to get your feet dirty. It stretches into Spanish Banks, and when the tide goes out you can follow the sand into the sea…and into your own private world.
White Rock Beach and Crescent Beach
Located in Vancouver’s suburbs of White Rock and south Surrey just north of the United States border, this area boasts expansive beaches that are great for long walks. Just remember to bring your boots if you want to venture onto the sand!
White Rock also has a nice walking path along the waterside train tracks, and a popular pier at White Rock Beach, if you’d rather avoid the sand.
Ambleside Beach
At the opposite end of Metro Vancouver, West Vancouver’s Ambleside Park has stellar views of the Lions Gate Bridge and Stanley Park across the water.
This is a good place to enjoy life with your best friend, if that happens to be a dog. The off-leash area has 3.52 hectares of grassy areas, trails, and beach.
Third Beach, Stanley Park
At 8.8 kilometres around, the Stanley Park seawall is the ultimate long romantic walk. Set out for the long haul, or consider saddling up a bicycle built for two.
Or, head to Third Beach, a sandy stretch not far from English Bay in the city’s West End. With a much more secluded feel, it’s a great place to watch the sunset–and steal a kiss, of course.
