Vancouver’s entertainment district is about to get a bit more entertaining.

Soon to be added to the lineup of bars and pubs along Granville Street is a unique night circus.  The Vancouver FanClub, the new venue from the owners of the Yale blues club, is set to be the host of the over-the-top spectacle called Atlantis, which will combine Cirque-du-Soleil-style aerial stunts with burlesque dancing, live music and theatre.

The pilot for the new program will kick off during Dine Out 2014, Jan. 17-Feb. 2, Vancouver’s annual restaurant festival.  Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the FanClub will be transformed with lighting, props and even a trapeze.  Former Cirque du Soleil aerialists will swing from the ceiling while the city’s best burlesque performers strip down and strut their stuff and live bands rock out.

There’s one more twist: All this happens around you while you’re eating dinner.  Instead of the action being confined to the stage, it’s spread throughout the cavernous club.  In fact, in keeping with the immersive nature of the experience, guests become part of the show.  Upon entry, diners are given a special passport with an alias, character traits and special mission to fulfill by the end of the night.

Night Circus is another creative offering from the FanClub, which opened last year and has quietly been serving up some of the most innovative programming in Vancouver.  The venue itself resembles a New Orleans supper club, with French doors opening to a spacious, wood-panelled hall rimmed by a second-floor balcony.  Keeping with the Southern theme, the menu highlights barbecue, Cajun and other down-home fare, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients.

The FanClub is also hosting Dine Out’s edgiest event, Dinner at the Birdcage, where the city’s top drag queens put on a cabaret show, with singing, dancing and plenty of seduction, over a three-course meal. The concert-grade sound system and stage add up to a pretty memorable show, to say the least.

Atlantis: Night Circus will take over the Vancouver FanClub every Friday-Sunday from Jan. 17-Feb. 2.  Tickets are $50 with dinner or $25 with a cocktail.
