It’s your chance to be a kid again … complete with burger, fries and chocolate coin.

On Wednesday, August 12, Vancouver’s home-grown burger chain White Spot is holding its annual adult Pirate Pak Day. Normally just for the kids, the special meals packed with fast-food goodness will be available to everyone, for one day only.

If you haven’t tried one, a Pirate Pak is basically a kids meal, laid out inside a paper boat with a paper sail supported by a straw. The deck of the boat has a spot for a burger, fries, coleslaw and a soft drink. A scoop of ice cream goes into the prow and, of course, there’s the pirate treasure: a chocolate coin wrapped in gold foil.

Yes, it’s a bit gimmicky. But it’s the stuff of legend here in Vancouver, where the first White Spot restaurant was born back in 1928. (Now there more than 60 White Spots serving up Legendary Burgers and fries across B.C. and Alberta.)  It’s safe to say that more than a few Vancouverites have some incredibly nostalgic memories of going to White Spot as kids and digging into their very own Pirate Paks.

The Pirate Pak was conceived by White Spot’s late, great founder Nat Bailey back in 1968 as a way to “provide an exclusive dining experience for kids age 10 and under,” according to the restaurant web site. That’s a full 11 years before McDonald’s rolled out the Happy Meal. Today, there are breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner, Pirate Paks for kids, and they can be kitted out with everything from the traditional burger to tempura fish and even a “lifestyle pizza combo” with steamed veggies.

On adult Pirate Pak Day, you generally get your choice of four burgers: the Legendary Burger, Bacon Cheddar Bigger Burger, B.C. Chicken Burger and (for the health conscious) the Portobello Provolone Veggie Burger. Inside the boat are all of the standard goodies: creamy coleslaw, fries and soft drink and even the scoop of ice cream and coin.

Pirate Pak Day, now in its eighth year, attracts big crowds of nostalgic grown-ups at White Spots across Vancouver. Rumour has it that this year some special happenings are planned for the new White Spot restaurant at Dunsmuir and Richards Street.

And all this burger fun is for a good cause: $2 from every Pirate Pak sold on Aug. 12 is donated to Zajac Ranch for Children, a B.C. camp for kids facing serious illness or disability. Last year, Pirate Pak Day raised a whopping booty of $78,786.
