There won’t be a lack of girl power in Vancouver on International Women’s Day.
For the past five summers, a group of Vancouver girls between the ages of eight and 17 has attended a camp that teaches them how to rock. Vancouver is one of the cities that’s part of the worldwide Girls Rock Camp Alliance, a network of camps that help boost girl’s self esteem by teaching them how to play and perform rock ‘n’ roll. For one week, the campers form and name rock groups – with impressive titles like Murder Burger –  learn instruments and then put on an unforgettable performance that showcase the skills they learned that week. On March 8th, some campers, along with a group of Vancouver’s veteran female rockers, will come together to jam out a night of cover songs.

“Empowerment is our main focus,” says Sarah Buchanan, who is the co-founder and organizer of  Vancouver’s Girls Rock Camp. “We do that by giving the girls the tools to create original music, and giving them the place to do that and the place to perform the songs they’ve written with their bands throughout the week.”

As to what you can expect from Friday’s performance? A whole wack of covers. Performers will play music by female musicians who they admire, so expect to hear familiar tunes by Alanis Morissette, Kate Bush and Bjork. I’m sure there’s going to be plenty of sing-a-longing.

If you’re interested in supporting the future stars of Vancouver’s music scene, while supporting girl empowerment, this is one event you won’t want to miss.

“It’s a great way to get in touch with a youth swell of creativity in Vancouver,” says Buchanan.
