Florence, The Killers, and Mudhoney top two September music festivals in Vancouver

Florence + The Machine come to the Skookum Festival to promote their fourth album, High as Hope.

Two festivals in Vancouver this September should be enough to satisfy any music fans—and maybe some foodies, too.

Produced by Vancouver-based BrandLive, the inaugural Skookum Festival runs Sept. 7-9 in Stanley Park. Featured headliners include The Killers and Florence + The Machine, along with international indie-rock sensations like St. Vincent, Father John Misty, and War on Drugs. The festival has a food and visual arts component as well.

Then, from Sept. 13-16, the Westward Music Festival takes over Vancouver’s downtown and East Van live music venues. Now in its second year, and produced by Western Canadian concert promoter MRG, the lineups feature an eclectic mix of American, Canadian and local acts. Headliners include Angel Olsen, Mudhoney, and Kelela.

For more info on both festivals, see below.

Venues for Westward include The Imperial, Vogue Theatre, Rickshaw Cabaret, Rio Theatre, Fortune Sound Club, Biltmore Cabaret, and Venue. Some of the local headliners appearing include Jo Passed, Louise Burns, and Odds.

Tickets and wristbands for Westward Music Festival can be found at Ticketfly.com.

Some other acts at Skookum include Canadian bands Metric, Arkells, and Blue Rodeo. Mother Mother, Dear Rouge and Said the Whale are among the many local groups that have been announced.

Skookum features a food component as well. There’s a long-table dinner series, a picnic basket program, restaurant pop-ups and of course the ubiquitous food trucks. Local distilleries, wineries, and breweries are also getting in on the act, with libations provided by Joiefarm Winery, Postmark Brewing, Liberty Distillery, Merridale Cidery, Main Street Brewing and more.

Festival-goers can also enjoy some visual art. On its website, Skookum promises “massive collaborative murals, interactive installations, innovative sculptures and communal art activities” from “local legends as well as burgeoning heroes and Indigenous creators.”

Finally, Skookum offers an “after-dark” series of concerts in the downtown core. For details, check out skookumfestival.com or keep up with announcements on the festival’s Facebook event page.
