Tired of watching the Oscars in your living room? Wish you had a chance to walk down the red carpet, too?

The Rio Theatre in Vancouver may be able to help.  The funky theatre – known for its offbeat cinema, creative live acts and, of course, bar – is holding a free Oscar party this Sunday, timed to coincide with the awards show.

In true Oscar style, guests are encouraged to dress up in their fanciest attire and designer dresses.  There will be an actual red carpet outside the theatre’s entrance near Broadway and Commercial Drive, with a photographer on hand to get shots of the glamorous ladies and gents lining up for the big show.

Once inside, you can get yourself in the Oscar spirit by grabbing a glass of wine or a beer from the Rio’s bar (not to mention some of the only real buttered popcorn left in the city). Then, settle down inside the 420-seat theatre to watch the show on the big screen. Built in 1938, the Rio was recently restored with surround sound, state-of-the-art projection and luxury seats.

To liven up the evening, the Rio will also be holding contests throughout the night, with awards given to guests for Best Costume and Best Acceptance Speech.  Think you know whether the real Oscars will go to 12 Years a Slave or Gravity or Leonardo DiCaprio or Matthew McConaughey? You can also snag special prizes if you correctly pick winners of the six major Oscar categories: actor, actress, director, supporting actor, supporting actress and best picture.

Doors open for the Rio’s Oscar party on Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m.  The Oscars themselves start at 4 p.m.  The Rio is offering all of this Oscar excitement for free.
