Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond movie, opens this Friday, Nov 9, in North America. It’s already doing boffo box office internationally, and racking up mostly rave reviews.
Just prior to the movie’s opening, the Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver is hosting a Bond-themed party. On Nov 8 in the appropriately exotic XiShi Lounge, From Shangri-La With Love celebrates Ian Fleming’s gentleman spy with wine, women and song. Well, make that cocktails, women and song.
For the price of a $50 ticket, guests receive a glass of Bollinger Special Cuvee Champagne, one of four 007-themed cocktails created by Canadian Bartender of the Year Jay Jones, chips for a roulette table to win Shangri-La and Skyfall prizes, and Bond movie locale-inspired canapes.
To set the scene, parked outside the hotel will be an Aston Martin DBS, complete with a Bond girl (we take this to mean an attractive young woman in an evening dress, and possibly a gun holster). A few more Bond-type girls will mingle with guests to add to the spy-movie ambience.
Music includes a jazz singer and pianist performing Bond movie theme songs (“Goldfinger” and “Diamonds Are Forever”, we hope) and a DJ spinning Bond theme-influenced music (we don’t want to tell anyone how to do their job, but may we humbly suggest including selections from David Holmes’ funky spy music for the Steven Soderbergh movie Haywire?).
As well, guests are encouraged to dress up – as Bond or their favourite Bond villain or Bond girl. Prizes for best costume and at the roulette table include:
-Bottles of Bollinger ‘Skyfall’ 007 Edition 2002 Vintage Champagne in special edition packaging
-Blu-ray sets of the 50th Anniversary Special Edition James Bond 007 movie library (22 films)
-Spa treatment at CHI Spa in Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver (1128 West Georgia Street)
-Grand Prize: the Ultimate Bond Weekend for two at Shangri-La (deluxe room, spa treatment, breakfast, Bollinger ‘Skyfall’ bottle 007 Blu-ray set)
