Get your V-Day on with these special Vancouver events

Lesli Brownlee and Alex Rose in ABB Collective’s production of Sam Shepherd’s Fool For Love.

Dream with the fishes, soak up a heartbreaking two-hander or experience the post-VDay hangover blues with Vancouver’s bluest musical sex comedy performer. Here are a few events that will make this year’s Valentine’s Day (and Day After) one to remember.

Sealed With a Fish: An Adults-Only Aquatic Affair (Feb. 14, 6-10 p.m., Vancouver Aquarium, 845 Avison Way)—This special Valentine’s Day edition of the Vancouver Aquarium After Hours event is open to singles and couples. Event-goers can explore the galleries after dark, take in an Animal Sex Talk, watch a naughty puppet show, and imbibe alcoholic beverages. Tickets are only available online $27 for members and $35 for non-members. The event is 19-plus only and photo ID is required for entry.

Fool for Love (Feb. 14-24 at 8 p.m., Feb. 17 24 at 2 p.m., at The Shop Theatre, 3030 E Broadway)—In a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave desert, two transient lovers unearth secrets of their disturbing past in this Sam Shepherd play. “Written in the wake of Shepard’s divorce, Fool for Love drips with yearning; it explores the age-old battle between the heart and the mind,” according to a media release. “Though this story was first staged in 1983, the passion and heartbreak at its centre is so timeless that it rings just as true thirty years later,”  ABB Collective, the group mounting the play, calls it “passionate, explosive, raw. “I realized how much I owed Shepard and so when he passed I felt like I needed to do something, to say thank you,” said Lesli Brownlee, actor/producer, in a press release. Shepherd passed away last year. Tickets are $25 at theatrewire.com.

The Unconventional Romance Variety Show (Feb. 15 at the Rickshaw Theatre, 254 E. Hastings St.)—Join Vancouver’s preeminent practitioner of raunchy sex-comedy songs Shirley Gnome as she hosts a very unconventional evening. The event’s lineup include local talent “tearing down cultural myths about what it means to mash all the feely feels, and celebrating unconventional lovin’ in all of its hilarious, gross, intimate and honest glory,” according to the show’s Facebook events page. Besides host/performer Gnome, the lineup includes readings from Sara Bynoe, burlesque from Vixen Von Flex, gorelesque by Bloody Betty, storytelling from Story Story Lie’s Jo Dworschack, and stand-up comedy from Katie-Ellen Humphries and Melanie Rose. More performers TBA, plus games and prizes. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8, tickets $10 at ticketfly.com, $15 at the door.
