Got Craft? shows off Vancouver DIY culture, May 6

DIY fair Got Craft? returns to Commercial Drive this Sunday, May 6. This biannual Vancouver event features over fifty local vendors selling a mix of jewellery, clothing, bath and body, paper goods, home accessories, artwork, plush kids’ toys, chocolate and more.

Why get crafty? Because “mall” is a four letter word and spring is full of gift-worthy occasions. Mother’s Day and an onslaught of weddings join the usual round up of bdays and anniversaries. Everything at Got Craft? is made by Vancouver’s talented community of artisans. And you often get to meet the artisans at the event.

While spring craft fairs abound, Got Craft? goes out of its way to amp up the ubiquitous show and sale with food carts, a DJ and even a DIY Sewing Lounge by Spool of Thread – the beloved East Van sewing hive.

Find out more about the exciting new vendors appearing at Got Craft? after the jump.

The soft and fuzzy natural wool handicrafts at Honey Canada, by Vancouverite Yuki, have a variety of uses, from play to practical. They include kids’ toys, kids’ learning tools, sweet home accessories, and felted wool balls you can toss in the dryer with towels to save energy and reduce drying time.

Inspired by antiques, Lisa Wine Studios prints chic vintage images (postcards, bicycles, bird cages) on cream canvas pillows. She applies the same aesthetic principles to an array of iPhone cases, and even crafts a case that will make your sleek 21st century device resemble a retro typewriter.

Locomotive Clothing by Jay and Aaron Matte draws on Canadiana, circus imagery, science and trains to come up with unique prints for tees and scarves. Each item is screen printed by their “sweet little family run studio.” These Vancouverites got their start spray painting vintage items in a seedy East Vancouver back alley and sold it in local boutiques. They launched their apparel business in 2007.

Got Craft? takes place at the Royal Canadian Legion (2205 Commercial Drive) from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $3. Kids 10 an under are free.
