L’Gros Luxe – multiple locations

This local chain is wildly popular for their funky cocktails and bites. What’s better than a homegrown restaurant with a classic Quebecois poutine on the menu? How about a grilled cheese poutine? This sandwich incorporates two favourite comfort foods into one glorious cheesy dish—buttered artisanal bread stuffed with a mix of cheeses including fresh squeaky cheese curds, fries and vegetarian brown gravy. For an extra charge, “pimp” your grilled cheese with a choice of toppings like pulled pork, bacon, guacamole or a fried egg, among others.

MLT DWN – 837 Du Mont-Royal Avenue East

MLT DWN (pronounced melt down) claims that they’re “more than just cheese and bread”. Using fresh ingredients and homemade recipes, this spot specializes in gourmet grilled cheeses. They have 12 signature sandwiches on their menu that include a mac ’n cheese sandwich, which features Kraft Dinner in the actual sandwich, and their popular beef brisket—caramelized onion, arugula, provolone, gruyere with garlic truffle mayo on rye. MLT DWN also has a “build-your-own” option where you can customize a sandwich to your liking by picking the type of bread, cheese and toppings.

Chez Nick – 1377 Greene Avenue

This local neighbourhood diner located in Westmount has been open for over 90 years.  A classic diner with an all-day breakfast menu, this spot serves up a proper dose of nostalgia with every order. Check out their blueberry grilled cheese: blueberries, brie and fresh basil drizzled with honey, served on their famous rye bread.

Orange Julep – 7700 Décarie Boulevard

What’s a classic drive-in without a proper old-school grilled cheese sandwich? How about a drive-in in the shape of a giant orange? With a typical menu of burgers and hot dogs, there’s just something about bright orange cheese sandwiched between regular white bread pressed on a well-seasoned flat top. It also goes without saying that any visit to the “Big Orange” isn’t complete without a tall frothy cup of their famous julep.

Le Cheese – 5976 Monkland Avenue

What started off as a dream of owning and operating a food truck soon became a reality for three high school friends when “Le Cheese Truck” hit the roads a few years ago. Their truck’s popularity led them to open an actual restaurant in the Monkland Village where they serve their signature grilled cheese sandwiches exclusively on challah bread.
