Intimate and lively dance performances in East Vancouver

Vancouver’s groundbreaking dance series returns this fall for its 29th installment. For three evenings, Sept. 12-14, Dances for a Small Stage showcases some of Vancouver’s hottest emerging dance artists on a small stage, this one at the Ukrainian Centre (154 E. 10th Avenue at Main St.).
And yes, there will be perogies.
Presented by MOVent, Dances for a Small Stage 29 will showcase premieres from Kirsten Wicklund, Karissa Barry, Julianne Chapple, MACHiNENOiSY, Science Friction, Dayna Szyndrowski, as well as a remounting of plastic orchid factory’s _post.
This year also marks the beginning of a sister Dances for a Small Stage series in Québec City. In this spirit, La Rotonde – Québec’s preeminent centre for contemporary dance – is sending one of their top dancers, Jean-François Duke, here to perform and learn all the ingredients that go into making Dances for a Small Stage a success. Duke, who has danced with Le fils d’Adrien danse, the Festival Effervescence, and Cirque du Soleil, among others, will take back his newfound knowledge to the citizenry of Quebec City.
In addition to bringing in Duke, Dances for a Small Stage 29 is ensuring that audiences feel even better about their bodies while watching toned and fit dancers by teaming up with the Ukrainian Centre – famous for its Friday Night Suppers – to sell their perogies and sausages.

Wicklund studied at Goh Ballet in Vancouver and, at 16, toured China with the Canada Youth Ballet Company. She was named National Teen Outstanding Dancer at New York City Dance Alliance in 2006. She has competed in the Youth American Grand Prix ballet competition and shortly after joined the Studio Company at the Washington Ballet in D.C. She has also appeared in Season 3 of So You Think You Can Dance Canada. She has also worked with Rasta Thomas’ company Pretty Girls of Dance and Bad Boys of Dance and toured with the show Rock the Ballet.
