The musical lineup for the Khatsahlano Block Party has been announced.

The annual event, which stretches over 10 blocks on West 4th, celebrates the West Side, aka Kitsilano, one of Vancouver’s best-loved and most historic neighbourhoods. The Khatsahlano Block Party has grown with each successive year, and the July 12 2014 celebration looks to be the biggest yet, with no fewer than 12 stages featuring 50 musical acts, an outdoor art exhibition and forty food carts.

The music is a huge part of the Khatsahlano Block Party, and the performers were announced May 21. The biggest news is a headlining appearance by original members of pioneering Vancouver band the Poppy Family (1968-1973). They’ll be accompanied by local musicians who also play with the New Pornographers, Destroyer, and Black Mountain.

Another coup: ’90s jangle-rock band Grapes of Wrath will also perform.

Other highlights include electronic-pop duo Humans, synth-pop duo Lightning Dust, prog-rock outfit Bend Sinister, 2013 Peak Performance Project winner Rykka, and veteran Vancouver bands like The Evaporators (with frontman Nardwuar the Human Serviette), The Furies and Hard Rock Miners. Other notable performers include White Poppy, Jody Glenham, Shawn Mrazek Lives!, Tough Age and Phil Western.

There will be many other bands, as well as a stage devoted to the 12 finalists in this year’s annual local music competition the Peak Performance Project.

Other fun stuff includes an outdoor art exhibition featuring the work of I, Braineater (Jim Cummins), street performers and beer gardens. And it’s all FREE!

The festival takes place on over 10 city blocks from Burrard to MacDonald on West 4th, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information visit the event’s Facebook page.
