Does the 2012 Summer Olympics coverage leave you craving live sports action? Get your (free) fill of basketball, beach tennis and volleyball at KitsFest, which returns to Kitsilano Beach, August 10-12.

The annual summer sports and wellness festival is the brainchild of Howard Kelsey, a two-time Olympian who represented Canada on the men’s basketball team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and partner Julien Phipps.

KitsFest is known for attention grabbing stunts. In 2010, they introduced Vancouver to beach tennis. In 2011, they put an ice hockey rink on the beach.

In addition to sports tournaments for kids and adults, KitsFest 2012 has partnered with lululemon’s SeaWheeze Half Marathon to host Public Sunset Yoga on Kits Beach August 11. A record-breaking 1,000+ participants are expected. KitsFest attendees will also enjoy a Kids’ Zone, DJs and a Baseline Bistro with eats from local restaurants.

Get the full event details after the jump.

About KitsFest

KitsFest is a full-on community event by Howard Kelsey’s Canada One Athletic Foundation. They’re responsible for supporting thousands of BC high school athletes as well as Kitsilano Beach upgrades including repaving the Kitsilano beach basketball courts.

This year, the Canada One Athletic Foundation will resurface the beach tennis courts. I’m particularly excited about KitsFest’s plans to plant six palm trees on Kitsilano Beach this October, following the event.

KitsFest Sports

Men, women, boys and girls will participate in sports tournaments August 10-12. Beach tennis, volleyball and basket ball are all happening. Beach tennis is a novel concept. The video above is enlightening. Sports events start at 9am daily Friday, August 10 through Sunday, August 12. Check out the full team schedule on the KitsFest website.

Perhaps the biggest draw at KitsFest 2012 is the Public Sunset Yoga session at Kitsilano Beach – an opportunity to make 1,000 new friends while you get bendy. Sunset Yoga takes place 7:37pm to 8:37pm, August 11, led by Semperviva and YYoga instructor Mara Branscome.

KitsFest Extras

KitsFest is a family-friendly event with a Kids’ Zone. Expect an obstacle course, face painting, a VFD fire truck and VPD vintage police car on-site.

The event’s Baseline Bistro is serving up fare from the well-loved seafood resto The Boathouse (which happens to overlook the tournament area), as well as Earl’s and Chronic Tacos. Pick a team and cheer yourself hoarse, or just hang out in the middle of the action as DJs spin Motown and RB tunes.
