Pedal Powered Smoothies! Whistler Celebrates Earth Day

Whistler is full of skiers and snowboarders. Most of us sacrificed regular jobs and normal lives to live in a place where we can spend as much time as possible sliding around on tiny crystals of frozen water.
Because of that, things like global warming mean a lot to us. We live, work and play surrounded by snow and mountains – Whistler residents can’t help but be environmentalists by nature.
Saturday March 23, 2013 will mark Whistler’s fifth official Earth Hour and local residents and businesses are preparing to “go dark” from 8:30 to 9:30 PM in an effort to reduce energy use as part of a worldwide movement.
Started in 2007 in Australia, Earth Hour is an initiative to raise awareness about energy consumption and climate change by shutting off the lights for one hour. In 2012 more than 6950 cities and towns across 152 countries took part.
Of course in Whistler the fun doesn’t end just because we’re turning out the lights. Lots of people will be taking the opportunity to enjoy an evening stroll or a candle-lit dinner. The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is even offering guests a chance to make their own organic smoothies on a pedal-powered blender bike.
“It’s a biker bar with a twist,” says the Fairmont’s Jennifer Tice. “We’re teaming up with People Power Productions and setting up a stationary bike in the lobby where guests can blend their very own organic smoothie using muscle power rather than electricity.”
The Pedal-Powered Smoothie Bar will be set up for Après (4-5 PM) and then again during actual Earth Hour (8:30-9:30PM). The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is also offering acoustic music and a candlelit dinner with green-themed cocktails and desserts. Earth Hour is designed to get people thinking about their energy usage beyond just a single hour each year.
“Having the good fortune to live in such a beautiful place, it is our responsibility to take care of the community and wilderness around us,” Jennifer says. “We want future generations of locals and guests to be able to enjoy this area the same as we do today.”
Other Whistler Earth Hour initiatives include candlelit yoga at the Spa at the Four Seasons and a candle-lit family skate night at the ice rink in Whistler Olympic Plaza. Along with many local businesses, the Resort Municipality of Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb will be shutting off lights and cutting power feeds for Earth Hour 2013. What will you do?
