The wildlife in Stanley Park just got a little bit wilder.

Snoop Dogg – now known as Snoop Lion – has announced a show at Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl on Aug. 28.  Tickets for the show go on sale this Friday, July 12, for $50 plus surcharges on Ticketmaster.

The setting for the concert has taken music fans by surprise.  Malkin Bowl was built back in 1934 and consists of a small stage covered by a shell, surrounded by a gently sloping lawn.  The quaint venue is probably best known as the home of Theatre Under the Stars, which presents amateur musicals featuring local talent during the summer. (This year’s  lineup includes Legally Blonde and How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.)

But for one night, Malkin Bowl will be transformed into one smoking party, as one of the world’s most recognizable names in rap and RB takes the stage.  Snoop will be performing a “classic smash hits” set, lighting up the crowd with favourites from his more than two-decade career.

Speaking of lighting up, he’ll also be showcasing his new, reggae-influenced album Reincarnated.  The album grew out of a recent trip to Jamaica, during which Snoop experienced a spiritual awakening.  He converted to Rastafarianism and changed his name from Snoop Dogg to Snoop Lion.

The album explores reggae and dancehall sounds, with guests as diverse as Rita Ora, Miley Cyrus, Drake and Akon.  Earlier this spring, a documentary called Reincarnated was also released, tracing Snoop’s long career and his spiritual transformations in the birthplace of Bob Marley.

Snoop Dogg (a.k.a. Snoop Lion) performs with special guests Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl.  Tickets go on sale Friday, July 12, at 10 a.m. on Ticketmaster.
