Things to Do in Montreal: November 29–December 5

Along with the newly fallen snow in Montreal comes the beginning of the holiday season and its many events — this week brings winter sports, on-stage spectacle, new film, unique shopping experiences and live music…

(winter sports fans) Though the snowy season has only just begun to descend on Montreal, icy activities are already a go. Starting December 1, ice skate or take a sleigh ride in the sunshine and the snow at the Olympic Park, and even catch a musical performance or two while there. Watch pro snowboarders get huge air on a snow-covered man-made mountain at the Empire Backyard Party and bring the kids down to learn the snowboarding basics, on November 30, 2-11 p.m. at Place des Vestige in the Old Port – free! But what would the beginning of winter be without hockey? The Montreal Canadiens go up against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night, the Devils fight the Canadiens on December 2, and the Bruins take us on again on December 5, at the Bell Centre. And stay active in an extreme way with indoor rock climbing, surfing and sky diving.

(stage screen) High-culture and high voices unite at the 18th Opéra de Montréal Gala show on December 1 at Place des Arts, celebrating Verdi with excerpts from Aida, Don Carlo, Rigoletto and more. Cirque Éloize outdoes itself in Cirkopolis, a new high-flying acrobatic circus show about hope and love amidst banality, November 29-30 at Place des Arts. World-renowned Montreal dance company Groupe Rubberbandance impresses with passion and technique, blending ballet with breakdance in new production Quotient Empirique, to December 7 at Place des Arts. See a new interpretation of Shakespeare’s melodramatic tragedy Othello, by Montreal theatre company Scapegoat Carnivale Theatre, at the Segal Centre, to December 1. Centaur Theatre’s Urban Tales kicks off Christmas storytelling with hilarious touches on December 5. And Canada’s longest-running LGBT film festival, image+nation, continues, featuring films from around the world.

(shop spa) Downtown shopping takes a unique twist at the 10th-annual Souk @ SAT artisanal fair, featuring over 400 Montreal artists and their unique clothing, jewelry, housewares, toys, food items and more, November 28 to December 1, at the Société des arts technologiques. March over a few blocks for the Marché Casse Noisette, featuring stunning art and handmade crafts at Montreal’s Palais des congrès convention centre hall. After all the shopping and sight-seeing, relax and warm up at one of Montreal’s best spas, whether you’re looking for a quiet massage or a sauna with a view of the city.

(live music) Go dancing in cutting-edge style on Friday night as the Phi Centre closes its Rad Hourani fashion exhibition with live electronic-music sets by Jacques Greene and Mekele. Also on Friday night, check out Montreal electro-pop musician Jef Barbara, launching a new album at La Référence. Saturday brings amazing Niger-born Tuareg guitarist Bombino to the Phi Centre in a show that blends his Saharan blues style with rock and traditional African music, while the One ABBA Memories tribute show plays all the hits and lights up Places des Arts’s Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier. On December 1, celebrate the season in song as the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir holds its 31st anniversary holiday concert at Place des Arts, or hard-rock out to Halestorm, Red Light King and Stars In Stereo at Le National, or see singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lady Lamb the Beekeeper in action with Secret Sun at Divan Orange. On December 3, get into the holiday spirit with high-energy pop as Pink takes over the Bell Centre, or opt for the blues and jazz with the great Leon Redbone at Sala Rossa, or the eclectic singer-songwriter rock of Cass McCombs at Il Motore. December 5 brings Chicago’s Bare Mutants to town, featuring Jered Gummere of The Ponys, with openers CTZNSHP at Casa del Popolo, while a cappella group Straight No Chaser wows with spectacular vocals at Place des Arts.
