Nesting season is here. Fall always equals getting together with other creative types and feathering my nest, so to speak.

There are countless crafty types in Vancouver who not only sell their wares at fun fairs like Got Craft, Make It and Blim but also bestow their creative secrets to the rest of us.

This month is no exception. October contains a number DIY classes that will ease you into the fall months, fill your tub, your freezer and even your sock drawer. I thought I would share three of October’s not-to-miss, how-to sessions happening in the City of Glass. Located in the heart of Hastings Sunrise, Tiny Finery stocks locally made goodies like jewellery, ceramics, gifts and bodycare products. They also organize how-to classes for aspiring crafters. This Saturday, October 19, the sweet little shop will host one of their stockists, Element Botanicals, called ‘Bath Bomb!’

As you can guess from the title, the workshop focuses on creating goodies for your winter bathing adventures. For $35 the folks from Element Botanicals will walk participants through the basics of making bath bombs and bath teas, including some take home goodies. All bath treat ingredients are supplied and registration is required because class size is limited.

Sitting on my living room record shelf is a roll of jute and a pair of knitting needles that stare at me nightly. A gift from a friend this summer, the spool stays raveled and the needles are still. Perhaps I should visit this weekend’s Knit City at the Croatian Cultural Centre.

In its second year, Knit City features workshops and vendors focusing on knitting, felting and other fibre arts. With uber-educational classes like Sox-pertise, Needle Felting and Crochet for Knitters, the event is open to a variety of skill levels. Knit City’s trade show is full of yarny bits and bobs from shops and artists from across B.C. Admission to the tradeshow is five dollars and classes vary in price.

Comfort foods top my list of fall and winter consumables. From soups to stews to mushy desserts, I am a fiend for anything served in a bowl between October and February.

Great minds think alike, because the Dirty Apron Cooking School is offering the Comfort Foods Cooking Class on October 22. Students will learn how to create four delectable dishes like Lobster Macaroni and Cheese and Sticky Toffee Pudding.

For soup lovers, try out the Dirty Apron’s Soup Sisters series. Each month Dirty Apron collaborates with Soup Sisters, a non-profit that supplies soup to community groups serving women and children. For $50 students learn how to prepare delicious, healthy soups and then have a meal and glass of wine.

The soups are made in portions serving 150-200 people and are immediately delivered to the community organization they’re made for. Food in the belly for all and a fun evening out, now that’s my kind of class.
