Vancouver’s Burrard Hotel is about to go Hotel California.

The kitschy hotel in the heart of downtown (notable for its many palm trees) will be commandeered by musicians, artists and skateboarders on June 15 for Hotel Takeover: a one-night blow-out party.

Three full floors of the hotel (24 of its 72 rooms) will be transformed into edgy, interactive art installations by visual and sonic artists.  Meanwhile, in the palm-lined inner courtyard, one rager of a party will be going off.

Local bands and DJs will take the stage, as guests enjoy drinks and dine on Lebanese cuisine catered by local restaurant Nuba.  Headliners for the event are HUMANS, Vancouver’s high-energy electro-soul rockers.

The hotel even co-opted its parkade, transforming the space into a lower level garage party.  Action down there centres around a skateboard exhibition, organized by Red Bull.

The unique party is a fundraiser for the newly founded Jamcouver Cultural Society, a non-profit supporting skateboarding, music, arts and culture in the city.  The society is looking to raise money for its upcoming flagship event Jamcouver 2013, a skateboarding and music fest slated for Aug. 3.

The venue for Hotel Takeover, the Burrard, is an unusual, mid-century modern oasis on the busy corner of Burrard and Comox Streets.  First opened in 1956 as a “motor inn,” the hotel has firmly embraced its retro roots.  In fact, it still pretty much looks like a cheesy ’50s motel.

There’s a vintage neon sign out front.  A lush inner courtyard, planted with palm trees and exotic flora back in the ’60s, tries its best to evoke the Southern California vibe. The color scheme is dated and garishly bold – all bright yellows and turquoise blues.

In other words, the hotel is an absolute hipster heaven.  Beyond the tongue-in-cheek facade, however, rooms are surprisingly contemporary, with flat-screen TVs, espresso machines and free wifi.

Hotel Takeover at the Burrard Hotel is Saturday, June 15, starting at 6 p.m.  Tickets ($35) are available on Eventbrite.  There are even VIP packages with bottle service and accommodation if you’re really looking to live out your retro-glam fantasies.
