Aires Libres & Les Boules Roses light up Montreal’s Gay Village

Summertime in Montreal’s Gay Village is a dream. When the sunlight diffuses through the 200,000 pink balls strung above the pedestrian-only road, it casts a rosy glow that sets a beautiful atmosphere for sangria drinking, people watching, and club hopping. Outdoor Shopping on St Catherine

Outdoor Street Sales: While St. Catherine Street in the Gay Village will be car-free all summer, for three weekends it will also turn into an outdoor shopping mall! The bazaars will take place June 5-8, July 10-13, and August 28-31.

Festival International Montreal en Arts: FIMA is the coolest open air art gallery in eastern Canada. From June 11 to 15, the 1 km stretch of Sainte-Catherine Street between Saint-Hubert and Papineau will transform itself into BoulevArt! Passerby’s will get to look at some stunning multimedia creations, mingle with the artists who created them, and invest in something beautiful. There will be more than 120 exhibitors during this arty week, plus everyone will get to contribute their own talents to a collective artwork called “LIVE TOGETHER.”

Lez Spread The Word Movie Night: Lez Spread The Word will be hosting weekly outdoor lesbian-themed movie nights in Parc de l’Espoir from June – August. Schedule to come.

Catnip! Musical: Throughout the summer at Apollon a new comedy musical called Catnip! will be entertaining audiences- Check out the clip above!

Mélo-Cité: Mélo-Cité is a series of outdoor daytime concerts happening throughout July and August every Tuesday between Noon – 1PM.

Art Map

Art Installations: One of the greatest parts of Aires Libres is the celebration of urban installation art. Not only are the Boules Roses a work of art, but new and unique pieces will be scattered throughout the Gay Village all created under the 2014 theme of “Between The Lines”.

FIMA Montreal

The 2014 Aires Banque Nationale installation is called “HEDGE” by Architecturama. It’s a re-imagination of the popular luminous panels located on St. Catherine Wolfe across from Cabaret Mado.
