Vancouver Cupcake Throwdown 2013: Eat Lots of Cake and Watch Bakers Compete For Total Supremacy

Here’s an interesting proposition: What if you could make the world (or at least this city) better by eating cupcakes?

Try it out at the 2013 Cupcake Throwdown taking place at the hopping Fortune Sound Club in Chinatown Wednesday, February 27. The bakealicious competition for best cupcake in town takes place from 7 to 10pm. Comedian Erica Sigurdson will be MC’ing with DJ Hebegebe on the decks.

The sweetest part is obviously the cakery. This is truly one of my favourite Vancouver food events. Expect cupcakes by 25 pro and amateur bakers. Your $10 ticket gets you four cupcake tasting tickets and the chance to vote for your favourites. Extra tasting tickets are a pretty good deal: it’s only $1 to try another cupcake.

There’s also a raffle with prizes donated by merchants of Gastown and the Downtown East Side. The prizes are going to be good this year. Check out the list of participating businesses here.

Origins of the Cupcake Throwdown

The annual Vancouver Cupcake Throwdown, which launched in 2009,  is the work of Vancouverite Stephanie Frigon. According to this article by the Straight, Frigon is a cupcake lover and baker who works as a letter carrier for Canada Post. Frigon likes to pull community together through culinary adventures. In this case, she’s bringing together amateur and professional bakers, the organizations that the event benefits, plus those of us who still think of cupcakes as a meal substitute – long after the food trend peaked.

Who You’re Helping

This year the Cupcake Throwdown will benefit Friends of RainCity Housing who organize dinners for the DTES community, Five Star Footy Club who put on free soccer camps for kids from marginalized communities and Leaky Heaven Youth who assist in the artistic development of children.
