Whistler’s 10th Day of Christmas: Ice Ice Baby!

TAG: Family Time, Holidays

Posted by: Feet Banks

Editor’s Note: These are the 12 days of Christmas, Whistler Style so strap in and get ready for a week and a half of snow, excitement, twinkling lights, good times, great food and fantastic winter enjoyment. No Partridges, no pear trees (although there may be some tree skiing.) Happy Holidays.

In every crisis there is opportunity. So rather than lament the loss of an NHL season this winter, why not spend all that new free time partaking in Canada’s favourite pastime for real? Starting this weekend, Whistler guests and locals can enjoy free public skating on an outdoor ice surface at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

Snowy opening day of Skating at the Plaza

Skating at the Plaza was introduced in December 2011 and with over 15,000 skaters hitting the ice last year the Plaza rink is back bigger than ever and still totally free. (Ice skates can be rented for $5).

A free public rink right in the Village gives everyone a chance to skate under a disco ball amongst pristine alpine peaks of North America’s premier winter resort. From the distinct sound of cold steel gliding across the ice to watching your breath fog in the crisp winter air – Skating at the Plaza is more than just free family fun, it’s a chance to glimpse what it means to be Canadian.

Skating at the Plaza is free of charge and open daily from 11am – 4pm and 6pm to 9pm (10pm on Fridays, Saturdays. Hours are reduced on December 25 and 31.) Skate rentals are available for $5.

Here’s a video of some kids enjoying Skating at the Plaza last winter.

Last-Minute Gift Idea #10

Open Sesame

It’s not that exciting to the average person but anyone who has spent any amount of time in a kitchen understands the value of a solid can-opener with a good, smooth opening gear. Cranking away on a cheap can-opener that constantly skips off the rim can be frustrating enough to ruin a meal. Problem solved with this baby– the best can-opener available at the excellent Whistler Kitchen Works in the Whistler Marketplace. Make the chef in your life happy this Christmas (and you will eat better for the rest of the year.)
